GR5 TO GR6 — ABLETON SESSION CONVERTER
macOS only. Free. Original sessions are never modified.

WHY
Guitar Rig 5 is no longer supported, but older Ableton sessions still point at the Guitar Rig 5 Audio Unit. This tool rewrites that AU identity to Guitar Rig 6 FX and writes a new “ -GR6.als” copy. The embedded Native Instruments preset payload is kept byte-for-byte. It does not rebuild the rack inside Guitar Rig 6, so you must open the copy and listen.

WHAT YOU NEED
- A Mac
- Guitar Rig 6 installed (the AU, not only the standalone app)
- Sessions that use Guitar Rig 5 as an Audio Unit. VST / VST3 instances are left alone.
- Python 3, which macOS installs with Command Line Developer Tools. If a system window asks you to install them, say yes. Nothing else to download or pip-install.

INSTALL
1. Unzip this folder.
2. Control-click “Make-GR6-Drop-App.command” and choose Open. Confirm Open if macOS asks. Do this the first time instead of a plain double-click — that is what clears the “cannot be opened / no permission” block.
3. The builder creates “GR5 to GR6 Converter.app” in the same folder.
4. Drag one or more .als files onto that app.
5. Open the new “ -GR6.als” file in Ableton and check every Guitar Rig.

If a file named “ -GR6.als” already exists, a number is added so nothing is overwritten.

COMMAND LINE
/usr/bin/python3 gr5_to_gr6.py "/path/to/session.als"

LIMIT
The embedded Guitar Rig state is preserved, not translated. A session can open in Live and still have a rack that does not restore perfectly inside Guitar Rig 6. Keep the original.
